BEIJING: China on Wednesday strongly criticized reported new US trade restrictions targeting Chinese technology products, warning that the proposed measures would undermine bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing firmly opposes what it described as Washington’s misuse of national security concerns to restrict Chinese businesses. He accused the United States of stretching the concept of national security beyond its intended scope and using state power to target Chinese companies engaged in legitimate international trade.
The remarks came after reports that the United States is considering new restrictions on imports of Chinese optical transceivers, along with additional tariffs and price controls on polysilicon and related products.
Lin said such protectionist measures would not strengthen US competitiveness but would instead disrupt normal trade and commercial exchanges between Chinese and American companies. He stressed that the reported restrictions would harm businesses and consumers in both countries while undermining broader economic cooperation.
Reaffirming Beijing’s position, Lin said China would continue taking necessary steps to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies. He emphasized that mutually beneficial trade relations serve the interests of both countries and urged Washington to avoid policies that could further strain economic ties and create unnecessary barriers to international commerce, according to Anadolu Agency.
