ADDIS ABABA, July 26: Cooperation between Ethiopia and China in artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies is strengthening Ethiopia’s technological capabilities and supporting innovation across key development sectors, officials and experts said.
The partnership has advanced cooperation in meteorology, space science and geospatial technologies, helping Ethiopian institutions adopt modern systems and improve technical expertise.
The Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI) has worked closely with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) on weather and climate services. Ethiopian experts have received training in satellite data analysis, climate forecasting, atmospheric research and disaster risk management.
Through AI, machine learning and advanced data analytics, the two countries are developing improved weather forecasting models. A major achievement is the deployment of China’s MAZU early warning system, which helps provide real-time alerts for weather hazards, including droughts and floods.
EMI Deputy Director General Asaminew Teshome said the system has positioned Ethiopia as a pioneer in Africa and could enable the country to share knowledge with other meteorological centres.
Ethiopia has also joined the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as one of its 29 founding members, reflecting its commitment to AI development, digital transformation and global technology cooperation.
