BEIJING/DAKAR, July 30: Chinese-made electric tricycles are becoming increasingly popular in Cape Verde, helping small businesses and families improve livelihoods through affordable and efficient transport solutions.
In Praia, 40-year-old Ivanilda da Veiga uses her electric tricycle to transport fresh tuna from a fishing pier to city markets. The vehicle, purchased by her husband, has reduced transport costs and made her daily work easier.
Across Cape Verde, a growing number of residents are adopting Chinese electric tricycles for deliveries, small businesses and daily transportation. Their ability to navigate narrow streets, carry goods and operate without fuel costs has made them suitable for local communities.
Many of these vehicles come from Fengxian County in China’s Jiangsu Province, a major hub of electric tricycle production. The county hosts more than 1,400 manufacturers and accounts for a significant share of China’s electric tricycle market.
Chinese companies are expanding exports by offering customized models, including solar charging systems and multifunctional designs suited to local needs.
Industry experts say China’s complete manufacturing chain, cost advantages and innovation capabilities are driving global demand. However, they note that companies must strengthen after-sales services and adapt to different international regulations.
With rising energy costs and growing demand for affordable mobility, Chinese electric tricycles are expected to gain wider acceptance in overseas markets.
