The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that continued drone attacks are worsening the humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Kordofan region, where a cholera outbreak and severe water shortages are threatening thousands of civilians.
According to OCHA, drone strikes last week reportedly targeted a civilian vehicle near Al Shaatut village in North Kordofan and a water truck in Hamrat Al Sheikh, causing civilian casualties and further disrupting access to essential water supplies.
OCHA said cholera continues to spread across Kordofan, with humanitarian partners reporting a suspected case in El Obeid. Repeated attacks have reduced the city’s water supply to just 20 percent of its needs, increasing the risk of disease and hardship.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has established a cholera treatment centre in El Obeid and pre-positioned medical supplies. OCHA has allocated more than US$4 million through the Sudan Humanitarian Fund to support healthcare, food security, water and sanitation, protection services and mine action.
In South Kordofan, UNICEF has delivered health supplies to Abu Jubaiha to support emergency and routine healthcare for about 240,000 people.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises and displacing millions.
