ANKARA: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday reaffirmed Türkiye’s strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability, saying Ankara is closely monitoring diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Israeli attacks and occupation.
Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Erdogan said Türkiye is prepared to contribute to regional peace initiatives and strengthen cooperation with Lebanon across multiple sectors. He also welcomed improving dialogue between Lebanon and Syria, describing it as beneficial for both neighbouring countries.
Erdogan said Türkiye is ready to play an active role in international efforts to safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty following the planned withdrawal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He noted that Aoun’s visit was the first by a Lebanese head of state to Türkiye in 17 years and expressed confidence in his leadership.
The Turkish president also stressed that Türkiye would continue humanitarian, technical and institutional support for Lebanon while remaining ready to assist in rebuilding southern Lebanon once hostilities end.
President Aoun said discussions are continuing on a possible international force to replace UNIFIL, emphasizing that any future mission must support the Lebanese army, preserve stability and fully respect Lebanon’s national sovereignty.
