Brussels, August 24 (QNA) – The European Commission on Monday approved additional financial assistance worth EUR 6.1 billion (USD 7.12 billion) for Ukraine to purchase new defense systems.
In a statement, the European Union (EU) said that the assistance is provided in support for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunitions, and radars.
It noted that the package comes on top of EUR 16 billion in previously approved procurement plans, of which EUR 8.35 billion has already been disbursed.
The EU said that it is stepping up its efforts to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its airspace, as Russia escalates its attacks.
The Union affirmed that Europe stands with Ukraine and that the EU will provide Kyiv with what it needs.
In recent weeks, the pace of reciprocal Russian and Ukrainian attacks targeting infrastructure and energy facilities has intensified, amid stalled US-led mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire and create conditions for a return to the negotiating table.
