European Council President António Costa has called for a “360-degree vision” for Europe’s security, warning that rising geopolitical instability is directly impacting the continent’s stability, economy, and energy supplies.
Speaking at a press conference in Yerevan after the 8th meeting of the European Political Community summit, Costa said Europe must adapt to an increasingly complex global environment where conflicts in neighboring regions have immediate security consequences.
He was joined by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the summit hosted in the Armenian capital.
Costa emphasized that Europe’s approach must be grounded in multilateral cooperation, strong support for the United Nations system, and full respect for international law. He described the gathering as “historic,” noting participation from regional leaders, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev via video link, as evidence of ongoing diplomatic engagement in the South Caucasus.
“This summit will forever be remembered as a summit of peace in the Caucasus,” Costa said, crediting diplomatic efforts and political decisions for progress in regional dialogue.
He underlined that lasting peace and stability depend on stronger democratic institutions and enhanced economic cooperation among neighboring countries.
On Ukraine, Costa reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment, saying support will continue “for as long as it takes” to achieve a just and lasting peace. He also urged faster progress on Ukraine’s EU accession process, including opening the first negotiation cluster “as soon as possible.”
