An explosion was reported in the Sayyida Zeinab area south of Damascus on Friday, with Syrian authorities confirming that a hand grenade detonated in the suburb, according to state media reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area as specialized teams launched an investigation into the incident, state news agency SANA said, citing a security source.
No immediate reports of casualties or material damage were confirmed at the time of reporting.
Sayyida Zeinab, located south of the Syrian capital, is home to a major Shiite shrine and has previously witnessed security incidents during Syria’s yearslong conflict.
