The death toll from devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal and China’s Tibet region has risen to 750, while more than 3,000 people remain missing, authorities and local media reported Sunday.
In Nepal, 2,498 people are still missing, including 933 hydropower workers, 589 foreign nationals and 127 Nepalis traveling with foreign tourists. Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet.
Nearly 20,000 security personnel have rescued 8,186 people, while helicopters evacuated hundreds of hydropower workers and foreign nationals.
The disaster struck the China-Nepal border region on Wednesday after a sudden glacial collapse unleashed a powerful surge of water and debris through Himalayan valleys, destroying villages and damaging major infrastructure.
Relief operations are continuing with food, medical assistance and essential supplies being delivered to affected communities. Authorities are also providing emergency cash assistance.
Search teams face severe challenges from rugged terrain, steep mountains and narrow gorges. India has deployed an 11-member tunnel rescue reconnaissance team to support the operation.
The United States announced more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal.
Authorities said a newly formed Himalayan lake has significantly shrunk after naturally releasing its water, easing fears of another major flood.
