The Global Sumud Flotilla coalition has accused Israeli forces of subjecting detained activists to “systematic torture” following the interception of aid vessels en route to Gaza in international waters.
According to the coalition, Israeli naval forces seized more than 20 boats carrying humanitarian activists attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza. Around 175 civilians were taken into custody during the operation, which it described as unlawful.
Among those detained were Spanish-Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian activist Thiago de Avila. The coalition alleged detainees were transferred to an Israeli vessel and subjected to physical and verbal abuse. It further claimed Abukeshek was isolated and tortured, citing witness accounts of distress and screams.
The coalition said at least 36 activists were injured during the interception and later treated after being transferred to a port in southern Crete. It also said legal efforts to block the transfer of detainees from international waters were unsuccessful.
The group called the incident a serious escalation and a violation of international law, demanding the release of all remaining detainees. It urged international and European authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
Israeli authorities have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations. The situation remains under review amid ongoing diplomatic and legal discussions.
The flotilla said its mission aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amid continued blockade restrictions and worsening humanitarian conditions.
