PARIS, May 31 — France has expressed deep concern over Israel’s expanding military operations in Lebanon and has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the worsening situation.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Paris requested the emergency session amid growing alarm over Israel’s continued military presence inside Lebanese territory. Speaking to BFMTV, Barrot described the situation as “extremely concerning” and warned that prolonged military operations risk further destabilizing the region.
He said nothing could justify the extension of military activity in Lebanon or the increasing occupation of Lebanese territory, calling Israel’s actions a “major mistake.”
The remarks underscore France’s concern over rising tensions across the Middle East as regional conflicts continue to threaten stability and security.
Barrot also urged Iran and the United States to reach an agreement aimed at easing tensions, saying the current situation is unsustainable. He noted that disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz are affecting energy markets and placing pressure on economies worldwide, including France.
The French minister added that discussions remain ongoing regarding a potential mission to safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with planning efforts at an advanced stage and diplomatic contacts continuing with both Tehran and Washington.
