GAZA CITY: An 11-year-old Palestinian girl has found hope after receiving a personal message from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who praised her artwork depicting him on a damaged wall in Gaza.
Layan Al Gugha said she was overwhelmed after Sanchez thanked her by name in a video message, saying Spain “hears, sees, cares about and does not forget” the children of Gaza. She described the gesture as one of the happiest moments of her life and proof that the voices of Gaza’s children can reach the world.
Layan painted the mural with local artists as a tribute to Spain, which has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and recognised the State of Palestine.
Despite losing her home, her father’s job and many cherished belongings during the conflict, Layan continues to paint to express hope and share the experiences of Gaza’s children. She dreams of opening an art academy to help young people overcome trauma through creativity.
She appealed to the international community to listen to Gaza’s children and support efforts for peace, saying every drawing reflects a real story of loss, resilience and hope for a better future.
