JAKARTA, Aug. 24: The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia’s Flores region on Aug. 15 has risen to 100, while 1,603 people were injured and more than 180,000 remain displaced, authorities said Monday.
National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) chief Suharyanto said many additional victims had initially suffered serious injuries and later died while receiving treatment.
Authorities have recorded 6,409 aftershocks, including 33 with a magnitude of at least 5.0. The strongest measured 6.2.
Suharyanto urged residents to ignore false information about stronger earthquakes or another tsunami, saying aftershock activity has declined in recent days.
Officials said aftershocks could continue for three to four weeks, although their frequency and intensity are expected to decline.
The government continues delivering aid to displaced residents, including those in remote areas, as recovery efforts continue following the powerful earthquake.
