TEHRAN, May 31 — Iran has reiterated that it will not enter into any agreement with the United States unless tangible and verifiable outcomes are secured before Tehran fulfills its commitments.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, said the country remains cautious due to what he described as a lack of trust in Washington’s promises. Speaking during a virtual session of parliament after taking the oath as the re-elected speaker, Qalibaf stressed that protecting the rights and interests of the Iranian people remains Tehran’s top priority.
“Our only criterion is achieving tangible results before we fulfill our commitments in return,” he said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
Regional tensions have remained high since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February triggered a cycle of military escalation. Iran responded with attacks targeting Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf region and temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire mediated by Pakistan took effect on April 8, helping reduce hostilities. However, subsequent negotiations in Islamabad failed to secure a lasting settlement. U.S. President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.
Iran and the United States continue exchanging proposals as efforts persist to revive direct negotiations and reach a durable agreement.
