TEHRAN, July 19: Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said Sunday that US airstrikes targeted the Darkhovin nuclear power plant, a facility under construction in the country’s southwest.
In a statement on X, the organization described the strike on what it called a peaceful nuclear facility under international safeguards as what it described as a violation of international law. It gave no details on the extent of the damage or whether construction activities at the site had been disrupted by the attack.
The statement came as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalated following a new exchange of military attacks. Iran said it retaliated by targeting facilities and bases it claims are used by US forces in several regional countries.
The latest confrontation comes despite a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding signed in June to end hostilities and work toward a lasting peace agreement. The developments have renewed concerns about regional stability.
