JERUSALEM, June 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Monday they ordered the military to carry out strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs, citing repeated Hezbollah violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon.
In a joint statement, they accused Hezbollah of rocket and drone attacks on northern Israeli cities, prompting Israel to broaden its military response.
Israel’s Channel 12 News reported the decision followed U.S. approval for expanded operations in Lebanon, extending beyond southern areas to include strikes in the capital.
Earlier, an Israeli soldier from an elite commando unit was killed in southern Lebanon in a drone attack attributed to Hezbollah. Three other soldiers were wounded, including one seriously, in the village of Yohmor.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Hezbollah continued firing rockets and drones toward northern Israel throughout Monday morning. Some were intercepted, while others landed in open areas without casualties.
The military also said it destroyed a launcher used in a rocket attack on the northern city of Tiberias on Sunday night.
The developments mark further escalation in cross-border hostilities despite international efforts to maintain the ceasefire and prevent wider regional conflict.
