TOKYO: At least 37 people were injured after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, early Sunday, according to local authorities and media reports.
The earthquake occurred at around 2 a.m. local time at a depth of about 70 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The tremor registered lower 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures, as well as Tokyo’s Adachi Ward.
The earthquake caused burst water pipes and temporary flooding on some roads, while several train services in the Kanto region were disrupted. Operations were gradually restored.
The shaking was widely felt across northeastern and central Japan, including Tokyo, where residents reported strong tremors.
The meteorological agency warned residents to remain alert for possible further earthquakes over the coming week, particularly during the next two to three days.
No abnormalities were reported at the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant or the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear facilities, according to their operators.
