The term “Ultraman-style inspection” has become a buzzword in Japan after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi spent only three minutes with evacuees during a visit to the Kumamoto earthquake disaster zone, drawing online criticism.
Japanese media and netizens also criticized her office for releasing a promotional video, while Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi faced backlash over a publicity-focused photograph during relief efforts.
The reactions reflect wider public concerns over rising living costs, stagnant real wages, mounting debt and household financial pressure.
At the same time, the Takaichi administration has pursued increased defense spending and expanded military capabilities, including long-range missiles and other advanced weapons.
Critics argue that government resources should prioritize livelihoods, pensions, healthcare and disaster relief rather than military expansion.
They have questioned why military spending can be approved rapidly while measures to address economic hardship face funding constraints.
The article argues that excessive military buildup could deepen domestic social divisions and regional tensions.
