The Kremlin has stated that efforts to restore relations between Russia and the United States are still in the “initial stages,” as diplomatic contacts resumed following the start of Donald Trump’s presidency in January.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that while both President Putin and President Trump have shown “political will” to improve ties, the road to fully rebuilding the bilateral relationship will be long and challenging.
Peskov also dismissed reports that high-level Russian and US officials would meet in Saudi Arabia this week, calling the claims “false.” These reports suggested that meetings were planned between US and Russian officials, alongside Ukrainian representatives, to negotiate a potential resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The spokesperson also addressed the growing tensions in Ukraine, underscoring the expectation that Ukraine show genuine interest in peace. He stated, “The key issue is whether the Ukrainian government truly seeks peace, which is what both the US and Russia hope for.”
The recent discussions between Russian and US officials in Riyadh marked their first high-level meeting since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022. These talks were aimed at fostering peace negotiations and improving diplomatic relations. Further meetings have taken place in Istanbul to normalize embassy operations.
Peskov also commented on Moscow’s expulsion of two British diplomats, accusing them of providing “false information” upon entering Russia. This expulsion is part of ongoing actions by Russian authorities to ensure national security.
The spokesperson expressed concern over the recent clashes in Syria, urging the UN Security Council to hold consultations to prevent further escalation of violence. Additionally, Peskov reiterated Russia’s commitment to resolving the issue of Iran’s nuclear program peacefully
