ROME: The second day of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel concluded in Rome on Wednesday as diplomatic efforts continued amid ongoing Israeli military actions in parts of Lebanon, a Lebanese source told Anadolu.
The three-day talks, which began Tuesday, represent the second round hosted by Rome after five previous rounds in Washington under a US-mediated process aimed at addressing outstanding issues between the two sides.
A Lebanese official said the atmosphere on the second day was more positive compared with the opening session, adding that Washington had given favorable feedback on Lebanon’s proposals. However, Beirut is still awaiting Israel’s response regarding a possible ceasefire renewal and an end to reported violations.
The source said Wednesday’s discussions included three parallel sessions covering political, military and border issues, with talks becoming more detailed and substantive.
The negotiations are taking place amid continued Israeli operations, including air activity and shelling in southern Lebanon. Earlier Wednesday, a Lebanese civilian was killed and 12 others injured in an Israeli airstrike on the southern town of Tebnine.
Lebanon and Israel signed a US-brokered framework agreement in June outlining a phased Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of the Lebanese army to strengthen security arrangements.
The talks are scheduled to continue through Thursday.
