Beijing, August 27: Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited the flood-hit Gyirong area in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region Thursday as authorities intensified rescue efforts following a devastating mudslide and flash flood along the China-Nepal border.
The disaster has caused significant casualties and left more than 1,000 people missing in Nepal and China after a high-altitude glacier collapse triggered a powerful debris flow.
Li’s visit highlighted the Chinese government’s priority on rescue operations and emergency response. Rescue teams have been deployed, while authorities continue searching for missing people and assisting residents.
China is maintaining close communication with Nepal over search and rescue operations. Nearly 100 Chinese nationals were among those in the affected area across the border in Nepal, according to Chinese authorities.
The disaster damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure, severely complicating access to communities.
Chinese authorities also warned of risks from a lake formed after the river was blocked by debris, which could create further danger if water levels rise.
The disaster has prompted closer coordination between China and Nepal as rescue and relief operations continue.
