WARSAW, Sept. 2 — Meta is introducing stronger anti-scam measures in Poland, including an upgraded artificial intelligence system and mandatory identity verification for financial-services advertisers targeting Polish users.
The company said the AI system will detect scams and block accounts impersonating celebrities, politicians, business leaders and other public figures. Identity checks for financial advertisers are expected within weeks.
The measures follow pressure from Poland’s government, which accused Meta of failing to address fraudulent advertisements and deepfake content used to deceive users and steal money.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski has asked the European Commission to fine Meta €250 million ($291 million) under the European Union’s Digital Services Act.
Tests by CERT Polska found 122 fraudulent advertisements. The government said 106, or 86.8%, remained online after being reported to Meta.
The European Commission said it would examine evidence submitted by Polish authorities.
Meta said scam-ad reports from Polish users fell 83% between July 2024 and June 2026.
The dispute comes amid growing concern over investment scams.
