Mexico City, May 11 — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday announced that Mexico is dispatching humanitarian aid to Cuba, reaffirming its longstanding position against the United States’ economic embargo on the island nation.
Sheinbaum said a ship carrying humanitarian assistance departed for Cuba on Monday, emphasizing that the move reflects Mexico’s commitment to solidarity and international cooperation in times of need.
“We are sending humanitarian aid. In fact, a ship carrying humanitarian aid is departing for Cuba today,” she told reporters.
The Mexican president reiterated that her government strongly supports the principle of national self-determination and will continue to stand in solidarity with Cuba. She noted that this principle is also enshrined in Mexico’s Constitution.
“Mexico will always act with fraternity and solidarity toward all nations, particularly Cuba,” she said.
Sheinbaum also restated Mexico’s longstanding opposition to the US embargo on Cuba, saying the policy has been rejected by Mexico since it was first introduced in 1962 during the Cold War era.
“We do not agree — nor have we ever agreed — with the blockade against Cuba,” she said.
She added that Mexico will continue providing humanitarian assistance to Cuba as long as needs persist, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian support and diplomatic independence.
