MIRPUR, AJK, Aug. 10 — The District Bar Association Mirpur and district administration have agreed to conduct a transparent inquiry into the July 28 alleged cross-firing incident between police and a demonstrating mob in Mirpur.
The agreement was reached during an in-camera joint meeting Monday at the Bar Room, attended by senior officials and legal representatives.
Commissioner Mirpur Division Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan, Deputy Inspector General of Police Mirpur Kamran Ali, Deputy Commissioner Mirpur Chaudhry Sajid Aslam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mirpur Khurram Iqbal participated in the meeting.
District Bar Association President Babar Khan Advocate and other lawyers also attended.
Babar Ali Khan expressed reservations over certain actions by the Mirpur administration and strongly condemned the July 28 incident. He called for an immediate and transparent investigation by a senior police officer.
The lawyers also expressed concern over the suspension of internet services in Mirpur and called for restoration of communication facilities.
Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan assured the association that a senior police officer would conduct the inquiry and lawyers would be given an opportunity to cooperate fully.
He said immediate contact would be made with relevant authorities to seek restoration of internet services.
The administration assured participants that police would, as far as possible, avoid violent actions in future and the Bar Association would be consulted on important matters.
Both sides agreed to maintain coordination, uphold the supremacy of law and work toward resolving issues faced by citizens.
