A Tribute to a Mother’s Eternal Love, Sacrifice, and Greatness
Written by: Dr. Wazir Ahmed
“Without a mother, there is nothing” — this statement truly captures the essence of life itself. A mother is a remarkable personality whose love, prayers, sacrifices, and care form the foundation of a person’s success, happiness, and peace. A mother is a mother, whether human or animal; there can never be a substitute for her. Every relationship in this world may change with time, but a mother’s love always remains selfless, unmatched, and everlasting. Nature has blessed a mother’s heart with such unconditional love that she endures every pain, sorrow, and sacrifice with patience and grace. She stays awake through sleepless nights, sacrifices her own wishes and comforts, and forgets all hardships simply by seeing happiness on the faces of her children. This is why Islam grants mothers an exceptionally high status and honor.
A mother’s love is not limited to humans alone. Even among animals, mothers risk their own lives to protect their young. This demonstrates that maternal love is one of the greatest emotions bestowed by Allah Almighty. Islam considers disobedience to one’s mother a major sin, while serving and respecting her is regarded as a path to Paradise. The well-known saying, “Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers,” beautifully highlights the immense value, dignity, and spiritual importance of motherhood. The Holy Quran also emphasizes the hardships and sacrifices of mothers:
“And We have enjoined upon man kindness to his parents. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship.”(Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15)
These verses honor the pain, patience, sacrifice, and dedication of mothers. Prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of mothers in a profound and beautiful manner. A man once asked: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who deserves my best companionship?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Your mother.” The man asked again, and he replied, “Your mother.” He asked a third time, and the Prophet ﷺ once again replied, “Your mother.” Only on the fourth occasion did he say, “Your father.” This Hadith clearly reflects the elevated position and dignity of mothers in Islam.
A mother is not only the one who gives birth; she is also a child’s first teacher, first friend, and first protector. The first word many children utter is often “mother,” because naturally, a child first experiences love, care, protection, and compassion through her.
The founder of Pakistan stated: “No nation can progress unless its mothers properly nurture and educate their children.” Indeed, a good mother nurtures a good human being, a responsible citizen, and ultimately a strong and successful nation.
Although every day belongs to mothers, Mother’s Day serves as an important occasion to recognize and celebrate the greatness, sacrifices, and importance of this sacred relationship. From childbirth to the moral, spiritual, and worldly upbringing of children, a mother plays the central role. She hides her own sorrows and struggles behind a smile for the comfort of her children. A mother’s love is the only love free from greed, selfishness, and personal interest.
Today, we also pay tribute to the mothers of Pakistan’s national heroes. The mothers of the martyrs and soldiers of the Pakistan Arm Forces, who sacrificed their sons for the protection of the homeland, are the pride of the nation. Their prayers, upbringing, and sacrifices have contributed immensely to the strength, dignity, and security of Pakistan.
We salute the mothers of our national heroes who raised sons that made Pakistan strong and invincible through their courage, sacrifice, and dedication. We also pay tribute to the upbringing, values, and prayers of devoted mothers whose guidance shaped remarkable personalities. Furthermore, we honor the mothers of all the unsung heroes who continue to serve the nation silently, sincerely, and selflessly.
On this occasion, we also pay tribute to teachers, doctors, engineers, farmers, scientists, researchers, laborers, and all professionals who work tirelessly for the progress, education, research, agriculture, health, and prosperity of Pakistan. Behind many of their achievements lies the sacrifice, guidance, and prayers of a mother. According to Former American President Abraham Lincoln, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Similarly, renowned poet and writer Maya Angelou stated: “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.”
Among all relationships in the world, the bond with a mother is the most sincere, selfless, and noble. When a person returns home, family members often express their needs and wishes, but rarely does anyone ask whether he has eaten or not. Only a mother lovingly asks first: “My child, have you eaten anything?” This is the purest form of love — a love that has no substitute. A mother’s prayers, affection, and sacrifices are among the greatest treasures of life. A mother bears every hardship for her children, yet never allows harm to touch them. Therefore, it is our moral and social duty to respect, love, and care for our mothers throughout our lives. We should look after their comfort, health, and happiness, speak to them gently, spend quality time with them, seek their prayers, and never let them feel lonely or neglected.
We must remember that a mother deserves not just one day of appreciation, but a lifetime of respect, love, care, and service. As mothers grow older, it becomes our responsibility to support them, care for their health and needs, understand their emotions, and listen to them with patience and compassion. A smile on a mother’s face and a heartfelt prayer from her can transform a person’s entire life. The reality remains: “Without a mother, there is nothing.” A mother is the beauty of a home, the blessing of life, and one of the greatest gifts of Allah Almighty.
In conclusion, it can truly be said that the greatness of a mother cannot be fully expressed in words. Motherhood is another name for love, sacrifice, prayer, mercy, kindness, and selflessness. A mother devotes her entire life to the happiness, success, and comfort of her children. Sacrificing her own desires to fulfill their dreams, feeling restless in their pain, and celebrating their achievements wholeheartedly are qualities unique to a mother.
May Allah bless all mothers with health, happiness, honor, and long life, and may those mothers who have passed away be granted the highest place in Paradise. Ameen.
