NEW YORK: New York City recorded the lowest number of shootings, shooting victims and murders in its history during the first seven months of 2026, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the city saw a significant decline in major crimes during July despite security operations for major events, including the FIFA World Cup, Fourth of July celebrations and Sail 250 festivities.
The NYPD reported 381 shooting incidents and 462 shooting victims from January through July, the lowest figures ever recorded for the period. The city also recorded 149 murders, the fewest on record.
In July alone, New York recorded 59 shootings, 81 shooting victims and 21 murders, setting new monthly records.
Despite the overall decline in violent crime, confirmed hate crimes increased by 9.4 percent during the first seven months, rising to 360 incidents from 329 during the same period last year.
Anti-Jewish hate crimes remained the largest category, accounting for nearly 57 percent of all confirmed cases. Confirmed anti-Muslim hate crimes also increased by 62.5 percent, rising from 16 incidents last year to 26 this year.
The NYPD said its Hate Crime Task Force investigates reported bias incidents before determining whether they meet the legal definition of a hate crime under New York state law.
