Donald Trump confirmed that a law enforcement officer was shot during a security incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday evening. The officer survived due to a protective vest and is reported to be in stable condition.
The incident prompted the evacuation of the president and First Lady Melania Trump from the Washington Hilton. Authorities said the suspect, identified in media reports as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, is in custody. Initial assessments indicate he acted alone.
Officials said the suspect attempted to breach a Secret Service security checkpoint inside the hotel. An officer was injured during the confrontation and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the suspect was also transported for medical evaluation.
Todd Blanche said investigations are ongoing and confirmed that multiple charges are expected, including firearms-related offences. Kash Patel said federal authorities are conducting a comprehensive review of the suspect’s background and possible motives.
Muriel Bowser said there is no evidence at this stage suggesting additional suspects were involved. Law enforcement officials confirmed the suspect was carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and knives.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in federal court on Monday. Authorities said there is no confirmed link to international developments, adding that the investigation remains focused on determining motive and ensuring public safety.
