Pakistan announced Thursday that a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran has entered into force with immediate effect, describing the development as a significant diplomatic breakthrough aimed at reducing regional tensions.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” was electronically signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan in its role as mediator.
According to Sharif, the agreement reflects a commitment by Washington and Tehran to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy. The memorandum provides for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and the lifting of the US naval blockade.
The Pakistani premier congratulated Donald Trump for what he described as a commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. He also praised Iran’s leadership, including Masoud Pezeshkian, for supporting diplomatic efforts.
Sharif acknowledged the contributions of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt in facilitating the agreement. He also highlighted the role of Field Marshal Asim Munir in advancing the negotiations.
The statement did not mention the previously expected official signing ceremony reportedly scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.
