MIRPUR (AJK), August 2: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured a commanding lead in the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, winning eight of the 10 Pakistan-based refugee seats for which unofficial and unconfirmed results were available late Sunday.
According to Election Commission sources, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won two seats, while results for the remaining two of the total 12 refugee constituencies were awaited.
Polling was held for eight constituencies in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee seats reserved for Jammu and Kashmir refugees settled in Pakistan. In Muzaffarabad Division, polling hours were extended until 6:00 p.m. to facilitate voters, while polling at stations across Pakistan concluded at 5:00 p.m., followed by the counting of votes.
Polling in one Muzaffarabad Division constituency was postponed until August 4 after polling staff and election material failed to reach the designated polling station on time.
According to the unofficial results received so far, the successful candidates are:
• LA-35 Jammu-II: Chaudhry Ismail Gujjar (PML-N)
• LA-36 Jammu-III: Ahsan Raza (PML-N)
• LA-37 Jammu-IV: Maryam Javed (PML-N)
• LA-38 Jammu-V: Zeeshan Ali (PML-N)
• LA-39 Jammu-VI: Raja Muhammad Siddique (PML-N)
• LA-40 Valley-I: Majid Khan (PPP)
• LA-41 Valley-II: Asim Ghaffar Lone (PPP)
• LA-42 Valley-III: Syed Shaukat Shah (PML-N)
• LA-43 Valley-IV: Muhammad Yasin Lone (PML-N)
• LA-44 Valley-V: Ahmed Raza Qadri (PML-N)
The polling process remained peaceful across most constituencies. Supporters of the victorious candidates celebrated after the announcement of initial results, while the Election Commission said the compilation of official results was continuing. The final position of all parties will be confirmed after the official notification of results for all constituencies.
