PML-N’s Tariq Farooq elected AJK Assembly Speaker with 32 votes

MIRPUR (AJK), August 25 (APP): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Tariq Farooq was elected Speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, securing 32 votes against 14 received by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Chaudhry Qasim Majid.
The election was held during a session of the AJK Legislative Assembly. Following polling and counting, Tariq Farooq was declared successful with a clear majority.
In the election for Deputy Speaker, PML-N’s Ahmed Raza Qadri also secured 32 votes and was declared successful. His rival, Aamir Ghaffar Lone, received 14 votes.
The results gave the PML-N a clear advantage in the election of both presiding officers of the AJK Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir parliament.
Members from both treasury and opposition benches congratulated Tariq Farooq and Ahmed Raza Qadri on their election.
The newly elected Speaker will preside over proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, while the Deputy Speaker will assist him in conducting the business of the House.
The election results also reflected the numerical strength of the PML-N in the Assembly, with its candidates securing 32 votes each compared with 14 votes received by their respective opponents.
The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker is expected to facilitate the Assembly’s legislative and parliamentary business.
