NEW YORK, June 2 (QNA): The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its continued commitment to mediation, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy as essential instruments for promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts, reducing tensions, and preserving international peace and security.
Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly during a meeting on strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention, and resolution, HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, stressed that mediation remains among the most effective tools for resolving disputes peacefully, preventing the outbreak of conflicts, and achieving sustainable peace.
She noted that mediation represents a fundamental pillar of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution, adding that its importance has grown significantly amid the increasing complexity of modern conflicts and the rising number of armed confrontations around the world.
The Qatari envoy emphasized that preventive diplomacy, mediation, and peaceful conflict resolution have long been key pillars of Qatar’s foreign policy. These principles, she said, are rooted in the country’s constitution and guided by relevant United Nations resolutions.
Highlighting Qatar’s international mediation record, Sheikha Alya referred to the joint efforts undertaken by Qatar, Egypt, the United States, and Turkiye that contributed to reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip last year. She stressed the need for all parties to uphold their commitments, fully implement the agreement, and facilitate the continuous delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
She also cited Qatar’s ongoing efforts in eastern Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in November 2025. In addition, she recalled Qatar’s mediation role in Afghanistan, which resulted in the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Doha in February 2020.
The ambassador further renewed Qatar’s appreciation for Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, reaffirming Doha’s support for initiatives aimed at de-escalation and the promotion of security, peace, and stability across the region.
