Lucerne, June 21 (QNA) – HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani led the State of Qatar’s delegation participating in the Lucerne Lake Summit and the first meeting of the High-Level Committee, attended by representatives of the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, alongside mediating partners Qatar and Pakistan.
The US delegation was led by US Vice President JD Vance, while the Pakistani delegation was headed by Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. The Iranian delegation was led by Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
During the meeting, the Qatari Prime Minister stated that the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran this week represents a major milestone achieved through sustained mediation efforts over several months. He described it as an important step that could shift the trajectory away from escalation and confrontation toward stability, restraint, and improved regional security.
He expressed hope that the agreement would serve as a turning point in addressing tensions and contributing to a safer environment for the peoples of the region. He also commended US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian for their leadership, courage, and commitment throughout the process.
He further acknowledged the contributions of key officials and mediators who played a role in reaching the agreement, including US Vice President JD Vance, Iranian Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and US Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, whose efforts were instrumental in advancing negotiations.
The Prime Minister also expressed Qatar’s deep appreciation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, and Chief of Defense Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for their leadership in initiating the process and their continued involvement at all stages.
He emphasized that Qatar’s partnership with Pakistan reflects a genuine commitment to diplomacy, reducing tensions, and creating conditions that enabled the historic breakthrough.
He also noted that the preparatory diplomatic consultations leading to the summit required extensive coordination among all parties, and that sustained engagement helped build trust necessary for convening the high-level meeting in Lucerne.
He added that the impact of the conflict has extended beyond the region, affecting global markets, energy supplies, trade flows, and the economic stability of billions of people worldwide.
He highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, noting that its security is not only a regional concern but a shared responsibility of the international community due to its critical role in global energy and trade routes.
The Prime Minister warned that any escalation in such strategic waterways carries global consequences and underscores the urgency of maintaining diplomatic channels and avoiding confrontation.
He reiterated that Qatar has consistently supported diplomacy, believing that dialogue is the only sustainable path toward security and stability. He expressed hope that the current agreement will allow countries to redirect efforts toward development, cooperation, and prosperity.
He added that the memorandum of understanding represents an opportunity to build trust and advance toward a more stable future. However, he stressed that progress must be sustained and built upon, as signing the memorandum is only the beginning of a longer process.
He further noted that technical talks beginning at the summit are essential for translating commitments into practical results and ensuring that momentum is not lost. These discussions, he said, must be guided by goodwill and determination to achieve lasting outcomes.
The State of Qatar reaffirmed that it will continue working with all partners to support dialogue, strengthen trust, uphold international law, and promote security, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond.
Qatar’s participation in the Lucerne Lake Summit, alongside Pakistan, reflects ongoing joint efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive and durable agreement addressing all elements of the memorandum of understanding.
The summit also included discussions on coordination mechanisms for follow-up implementation, monitoring frameworks, and technical committees designed to ensure continuity of progress and prevent setbacks in negotiations.
