Doha, July 06 (QNA) — Qatar’s Shura Council approved a draft law on state property in its amended form and endorsed a new traffic law before concluding the first ordinary session of its second legislative term, marking the 54th annual session of the council.
The meeting was held at Tamim bin Hamad Hall under the chairmanship of HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim. Following review of committee reports and deliberations on the provisions, the council referred both draft laws to the government for further action.
The council also approved extending the mandate of its Health, General Services and Environment Committee to continue examining a proposal for a general debate on artificial intelligence governance and regulation in Qatar.
Members reviewed a series of parliamentary participation reports from May and June, including virtual engagement with the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Executive Committee, a seminar on strengthening parliamentary action in agrifood systems, and participation in the Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum in Morocco.
HE Secretary-General Naif bin Mohammed Al Mahmoud read Amiri Decree No. 30 of 2026, which officially ended the ordinary session effective July 7, 2026.
In his closing speech, HE Al Ghanim expressed gratitude to HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for his continued support, stressing that cooperation between the legislative and executive branches has strengthened institutional integration in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
He noted that the council held 37 sessions during the legislative year and completed the review of 23 draft laws, alongside oversight debates and hearings with ministers and senior officials.
He further highlighted the council’s focus on social development, particularly family welfare and child protection. Its committees held 81 meetings, issuing recommendations on parenting support, family cohesion, sports clubs’ social role, and combating childhood obesity.
Al Ghanim also underscored a proposed law on digital child protection to address emerging challenges of expanding online platforms.
On parliamentary diplomacy, he said the council’s engagements reflected Qatar’s commitment to dialogue, peace, and multilateral cooperation, particularly regarding Arab and Islamic causes, including Palestine. He also highlighted Qatar’s success in advancing an emergency item at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Istanbul.
He concluded by praising members, committees, the General Secretariat, media partners, and citizens for their engagement, reaffirming the council’s commitment to national service and legislative development.
