MOFA spokesperson says rejection of peace plan delays implementation of agreements
DOHA, Aug 11 (QNA): Qatar has called for greater international pressure on Israel following its rejection of the Gaza peace plan, saying the move represents continued foot-dragging in implementing agreements reached to establish a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory.
Adviser to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, said Qatar hopes international pressure will help ensure implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
Speaking during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly press briefing, Al Ansari said recent developments had created an opportunity to advance the ceasefire process, with a recent declaration by Hamas contributing to a breakthrough in the agreement.
He stressed that responsibility now rests with the Israeli side to fulfil its obligations under the agreements reached to date.
Al Ansari said Qatar continues to work closely with its international and regional partners to facilitate the transition to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, based on the plan announced by the US President.
He said Qatar’s mediation efforts are continuing in coordination with the United States, Egypt and Türkiye.
The Qatari spokesperson expressed concern over the continuing escalation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, pointing to increasing casualties and continuing attacks affecting schools, hospitals, homes and other civilian institutions.
He stressed the importance of the international community taking a clear position on such actions and said Qatar is working with its regional partners to develop an appropriate response to the continuing Israeli conduct.
Regarding a joint statement on ongoing Israeli violations in Gaza, Al Ansari said Qatar supports measures undertaken by friendly countries, whether individually or collectively.
He referred to a statement issued by the foreign ministers of Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt concerning the situation in Gaza.
The spokesperson said practical steps related to the joint position would be announced in the coming days.
Al Ansari reiterated Qatar’s continued commitment to mediation and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict and advancing the ceasefire process.
He said Qatar will continue working with its partners to ensure that the agreements reached are implemented and that the process moves forward towards its second phase.
The Qatari official emphasized that the latest developments should not be allowed to further delay efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
He said the international community has an important role to play in supporting the implementation of the ceasefire understandings and ensuring that all parties meet their commitments.
Qatar’s mediation efforts, he added, remain focused on facilitating dialogue, supporting the implementation of agreed arrangements and working with regional and international partners to advance peace and stability.
Al Ansari’s remarks came amid continued diplomatic efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire process and move negotiations into their next phase.
He also stressed the importance of coordinated international action to support the ceasefire framework and prevent further deterioration of the situation in Gaza.
Qatar has repeatedly affirmed its support for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and establish conditions for lasting peace and stability in the region.
The spokesperson said Doha will continue its mediation role alongside its partners, with the objective of moving the ceasefire process forward and encouraging all parties to honour their commitments.
