BUCHAREST: The Romanian army on Monday carried out an underwater demolition operation to remove a rock from the Danube River in an effort to increase water flow toward the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, local media reported.
The army used 180 kilograms of explosives to dislodge the Parjoaia rock, which was obstructing river flow. The intervention aimed to improve navigation conditions and support future dredging activities along the Old Danube branch.
Acting Defense Minister Radu Miruta described the operation as successful, saying the removal of the rock was necessary for navigation and long-term maintenance work.
“180 kilograms of explosives were introduced,” Miruta said, adding that the removal cleared the obstruction and would make future dredging easier.
He said two barges would be loaded in the coming days with as much of the removed rock as possible. A heavy-duty crane will also be used to extract additional material and further clear the area.
Authorities said the project was carried out to improve river management while ensuring a more stable water flow toward the nuclear facility.
