KIEV, June 2 (Xinhua):
Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight on Tuesday left residents in eight regions without electricity, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said.
In Kiev, production facilities and infrastructure of an energy company were damaged, with two employees injured and hospitalized, according to the ministry.
The strikes also targeted oil and gas facilities across Ukraine, causing significant damage, the statement said.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 656 drones and 73 missiles in the latest wave of attacks. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 602 drones and 40 missiles during the assault.
Preliminary reports from Ukrainian authorities said at least 16 people were killed, including five in Kiev, while more than 100 others were injured.
The Energy Ministry said restoration work was underway in affected regions as emergency crews worked to stabilize the power supply and repair damaged infrastructure.
Authorities warned that repeated strikes on critical energy systems continue to strain Ukraine’s power network, especially as winter approaches, raising concerns over sustained outages and disruptions across multiple regions.
