KUNMING, June 16 — Sri Lankan businesses are using the China-South Asia Expo (CSAE) in Kunming to expand access to the Chinese market, showcasing crafts, tea, gemstones and other exports, Xinhua reported.
The 10th CSAE opened in Yunnan Province with over 560 companies from South Asia. Sri Lanka, the theme country last year, has increased participation to 100 companies, reflecting deeper engagement with China’s market.
At the Sri Lankan pavilion, exhibitors displayed products including jewelry made from banana stems, chili-pepper resin earrings, and ornaments featuring bougainvillea petals. Entrepreneurs said the expo helps them reach buyers and test demand in China.
Handmade jewelry entrepreneur Dilini Dissanayaka said the event promotes sustainable crafts beyond Sri Lanka. Acril Holdings is also assessing consumer response to organic cinnamon in China’s expanding market.
Business representatives highlighted long-standing ties. Sriroad Trade Company’s Manoj Liyanage said Chinese consumers are receptive to high-quality Sri Lankan tea and specialty goods.
Gem exporter Malan Jones of Jones Gems said demand for Sri Lankan rubies and sapphires continues to grow, with the expo strengthening trade links.
The event reflects historical exchanges between the two countries dating back more than 1,600 years along the Silk Road.
Officials said China is now Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade steadily increasing. Organizers called the expo a key platform for cooperation and investment opportunities.
