ISLAMABAD, April 23 — Stalled U.S.-Iran negotiations remain uncertain amid a fragile ceasefire, with mixed signals from Washington and tensions over implementation of the truce.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday there was “no time frame” for ending the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, adding there was no pressure to extend the ceasefire or advance peace talks. He had earlier said the conflict could last four to six weeks after it began on Feb. 28.
Earlier, Axios cited U.S. officials as saying the ceasefire could be extended by three to five days. Trump also extended the truce “at Pakistan’s request,” while maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports.
Iran refused to attend talks, accusing Washington of violating commitments through maritime restrictions and continued pressure. A planned visit by U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Pakistan was also cancelled, further clouding efforts.
Pakistan, acting as mediator, made extensive security arrangements in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, deploying thousands of personnel and securing hotels, though talks did not take place.
Defense analyst Tughral Yamin said delays reflect both sides’ efforts to maximize leverage before final commitments.
Iranian official Mahdi Mohammadi called the ceasefire extension a “ploy” to gain time, warning continued maritime pressure would prompt a response.
