Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations on Thursday said efforts to uncover and dismantle remnants of the former Bashar al-Assad regime’s chemical weapons program have reached a critical milestone.
Addressing a Security Council meeting, Ibrahim Olabi said the Syrian government remains committed to national and regional security and strengthening the global nonproliferation framework.
He said Syrian teams accessed high-risk and high-priority sites and handled sensitive materials and munitions with professionalism. This included securing and transporting materials and facilitating access for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) teams to conduct verification procedures.
Olabi described the operation as a “decisive turning point” in uncovering the full extent of the former chemical weapons program, calling it a major step toward accountability.
He noted Syria has cooperated closely with the OPCW, enabling 32 visits by its Technical Secretariat to sites suspected of links to the former program.
He said the recovered materials provide a database for documenting evidence, advancing investigations, and identifying those responsible for chemical weapons activities.
The ambassador stressed Syria itself has suffered from chemical weapons use and remains determined to eliminate this legacy. He added Syria has endured such consequences for over 12 years and is now committed to removing their impact from the country’s future.
