DAR ES SALAAM, July 18: Tanzania joined the global community in commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day, with leaders calling for unity, volunteerism and greater investment in youth development.
The event was held at the Women Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Development Organisation (WEEDO) in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam. Participants observed 67 minutes of community service in tribute to Mandela’s 67 years of dedication to justice, equality and human dignity.
Activities included environmental cleaning, gardening, mentorship programmes for girls and young women, and donations supporting WEEDO’s initiatives for vulnerable communities through skills development and entrepreneurship.
Representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Permanent Secretary Charles Ngeleja Kadonya said Mandela’s values of justice, reconciliation and dignity continue to inspire Tanzania’s development efforts.
He highlighted the importance of peace, unity and inclusive leadership, urging cooperation among government, private sector and civil society partners to promote education, innovation, skills development and entrepreneurship for youth empowerment.
