BANGKOK, June 9 — Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was set free on Tuesday after his electronic monitoring device was removed, completing the final step of his release under a royal pardon, local media reported.
Thaksin was initially released on May 11 from Bangkok’s Klong Prem Central Prison after a parole committee decided in late April to grant him parole. He was required to follow strict probation conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring device, remaining under supervision, reporting to authorities, and not leaving the country until his one-year sentence formally ended on Sept. 9.
On June 3, Justice Minister Rutthapol Naowarat said Thaksin had met the requirements of the royal pardon decree published in the official Royal Gazette on June 2, which removed the need for continued probation until Sept. 9.
The removal of the monitoring device on Tuesday marked the conclusion of his probation period, officially completing the process of his conditional release under the royal pardon framework.
