WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced what he called the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran, warning countries and businesses supporting Tehran of severe economic consequences.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said the US would seek to cut off financial and commercial channels supporting Iran, describing the campaign as “Economic Warfare” and “Economic D-Day.”
He warned that countries allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to provide any “lifeline” to Iran would face “tremendous economic consequences.”
Trump specifically mentioned oil smuggling, financial swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies, saying such activities must stop.
He also claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened, saying its navy, air force and military factories had suffered extensive damage. He described Iran’s currency as “worthless” and said the country was “hanging by a thread.”
Trump urged US allies to support Washington in isolating Iran and reiterated that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency described the announcement as another version of Washington’s “failed” maximum-pressure campaign.
Tasnim said Iran had gained experience circumventing US restrictions and had become adept at maintaining financial and commercial ties with the outside world.
