WASHINGTON, Aug. 21: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced what he called “unprecedented” economic warfare against Iran, pledging tougher sanctions and increased efforts to isolate Tehran.
Trump described the move as an “Economic D-Day,” saying countries providing Iran with an economic lifeline would face serious consequences. He urged U.S. allies to join Washington in isolating what he called the Iranian threat.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose its toughest sanctions yet, combining existing measures with a sweeping new package. He said maximum economic pressure could prevent a large-scale military confrontation and promised further details on Monday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi rejected the plan as “economic terrorism,” arguing that it threatens global economic stability and national sovereignty. He also accused Washington of using pressure on Iran to divert attention from its own economic challenges.
Analysts cited by the Financial Times said Iran’s long experience under sanctions makes it unlikely to quickly surrender to increased economic pressure. Chatham House analyst Sanam Vakil said Tehran continues to view resistance as its path to survival.
