US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran is using the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic move to maintain political optics rather than a genuine economic decision.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump said Iran prefers the waterway to remain open to sustain its oil revenues, estimated at around $500 million per day. However, he alleged that Tehran is publicly supporting the closure to “save face” amid the ongoing US-imposed blockade.
Trump further asserted that intermediaries had recently approached him, indicating Iran’s willingness to reopen the Strait immediately. Despite this, he warned that lifting the blockade could complicate prospects for a broader agreement with Tehran, using strong language to underline his stance on future negotiations.
The remarks came as Washington confirmed an extension of the temporary ceasefire with Iran, allowing additional time for diplomatic engagement. The pause follows talks hosted by Pakistan earlier this month, where both sides explored pathways toward de-escalation.
Efforts are ongoing to organize a second round of negotiations, though uncertainty continues to surround Iran’s participation and the overall direction of the dialogue.
In a separate message, Trump also claimed that Iran is facing severe financial strain due to the ongoing situation, suggesting internal pressure is mounting as revenues decline and state institutions face funding challenges.
