ANKARA, July 7 (AA):
US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the NATO summit scheduled for July 7–8 in Ankara, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Speaking to Bloomberg TV during a visit to Singapore, Fidan said that, to his knowledge, Trump plans to take part in the high-level gathering. He noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had held several phone conversations with Trump last month, during which the US president repeatedly indicated his intention to attend the summit.
Fidan emphasized that despite political rhetoric, the United States remains firmly committed to NATO, with no signs that Washington is considering withdrawal from the alliance. He added that he received no indication from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during last month’s informal NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Sweden that the US was planning to leave the bloc.
He further said that US institutions, including the State Department and Pentagon, continue close coordination with NATO allies. Washington, he noted, continues to press member states to increase defense spending and take greater responsibility for their own security, a message that European allies have already begun acting upon.
Fidan also discussed broader regional developments, saying both the United States and Iran are making “sincere” efforts to extend the ceasefire. However, he warned that Israeli military actions in Lebanon pose a serious risk to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
He reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for diplomacy and mediation aimed at achieving stability in the region.
