Washington: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has decided to replace a proposed 20 percent reimbursement fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz with trade and investment agreements involving Gulf states.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the planned investments would be significant and would bring increased industrial activity, factories and jobs to the United States.
Trump also said the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international shipping except vessels linked to Iran. He added that the US would maintain restrictions on ships traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo.
Earlier, Trump had announced plans to strengthen security measures around the strategic waterway and proposed a fee for commercial vessels using the route. The Strait of Hormuz is a key global energy transit channel.
The latest development comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent military exchanges. Both sides have accused each other of violating previous understandings, while claiming control over the strategic waterway.
A June memorandum of understanding had called for an end to hostilities, removal of restrictions on Iranian ports, and reopening of the strait for shipping.
