US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a long-anticipated agreement between the United States and Iran could be signed on Sunday, a development that may lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important energy routes.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the agreement was scheduled to be signed and that the Strait of Hormuz would be “open to all” immediately afterward. The waterway has remained a focal point of regional tensions following months of conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said efforts to finalize the agreement were progressing and that a deal could be completed within the next 24 hours. He noted that preparations were being made for an electronic signing process, to be followed by technical-level discussions in the coming week.

Trump described the proposed agreement as a safeguard against Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. He stated that Tehran no longer seeks nuclear weapons and would not obtain them through development, purchase or any other means. He also stressed that no financial payments would be involved in the arrangement.

The US president further said that nuclear-related materials associated with Iran’s program would eventually be removed and destroyed under appropriate supervision. He expressed hope that the agreement would open a new chapter in relations between Washington and Tehran and contribute to greater stability across the Middle East.

However, Iranian officials appeared more cautious regarding the timeline. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said no agreement was expected to be signed on Sunday, although he did not rule out the possibility of a signing in the coming days. He added that Iran’s negotiating team had no plans to travel abroad during the next two days.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and natural gas exports. As a result, any agreement affecting the waterway is being closely watched by governments, energy markets and international observers around the world.
