Two firefighting helicopters collided while battling a wildfire in western Attica near Athens on Sunday, triggering a major search and rescue operation, according to Greek public broadcaster ERT.
The aircraft reportedly collided in midair over the Psatha area before crashing. The helicopters had taken off from Elefsina Military Airport to assist in efforts to contain the fast-moving wildfire.
The pilot of one helicopter managed to contact the Fire Department’s operations centre after the crash, reporting that the copilot had sustained injuries. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to evacuate the crew and provide medical assistance.
Authorities said there was no immediate information on the crew of the second helicopter. Search teams were continuing efforts to locate the aircraft and determine the condition of those on board.
Emergency responders identified the crash site and deployed rescue personnel to the area as investigations into the cause of the midair collision began.
The incident occurred while Greece continues to battle wildfires in several regions during the peak summer fire season.
