LONDON: British Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from the government, intensifying political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following Labour Party losses in recent local elections and a series of ministerial resignations.
In a resignation letter shared on social media, Streeting said he had lost confidence in Starmer’s leadership and could no longer continue in government “honourably and on principle.” He linked Labour’s electoral setbacks across England, Scotland, and Wales to growing public dissatisfaction with government policies and leadership direction.
Streeting criticized controversial measures, including cuts to winter fuel payments, and argued that the party lacked a clear political vision. He warned that Labour was facing political drift at a crucial time and suggested the party should hold an open leadership debate focused on future policies and direction.
The resignation came shortly after Charles III delivered the King’s Speech outlining the government’s legislative agenda, including plans for public service reforms, stronger European ties, and green energy projects.
Despite mounting pressure and reports of a possible leadership challenge, Downing Street said Starmer would contest any challenge and had no plans to step down.
