The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the reported overnight exchange of fire between the United States and Iran, as well as reports of Iranian strikes targeting Kuwait and Bahrain, according to his spokesperson.
Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General is alarmed by the escalation and is closely monitoring the situation as tensions continue to rise in the region.
He said Guterres is deeply troubled by reports of civilian casualties resulting from the recent hostilities and has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
The UN chief urged all sides to avoid any further escalation that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring stability.
Dujarric emphasized that the Secretary-General condemns all attacks on civilian infrastructure and reiterated that international humanitarian law strictly prohibits targeting civilian objects under any circumstances.
He also expressed full support for mediation efforts currently underway, including initiatives led by Pakistan, and encouraged all parties to engage constructively and in good faith with diplomatic channels.
The United Nations warned that continued military escalation risks widening the conflict and destabilizing the broader region.
The UN reiterated its readiness to support initiatives that promote peace, dialogue, and long-term regional stability through negotiated settlement.
